Is free will an illusion?

I apologise in advance if I am going to offend you…

You don’t know what you don’t know.

In every second – we are receiving 100’s of billions of bits of information through our senses. Our brain is only processing about 10-12 million bits of information per second. And we are only consciously aware of about 120 bits of information per second.

Take that in...

Neuroscience also tells us that free-will is largely an illusion – that we make our decisions 300-400th of a second before we are conscious of them. So basically – we are living in the ‘past’ and have less agency than we think.

One part of us, however, does have free-will. It is our attention - in the present moment. Our most important resource of all… It is the single most precious aspect of our human experience – and most people squander it.

What we pay attention to in the present moment is largely governed by the ‘past’: genetic, epigenetic, social, and environmental conditioning. We are simply playing out scripts from the past, and wonder why the future isn’t any different. We desperately hope for a future that is different – kidding ourselves that if we just “keep at it” that the future will bring us salvation. But rarely it does…

To harness and reclaim our attention - and to use that precious resource to create a life of love, abundance, and meaning – we need to do things differently.

To truly thrive – we need to let go of our conditioning, patterns, and unhealthy habits – and embrace evidence-based solutions.

We all know intuitively what will make us healthier, happier, and more successful - but we can’t seem to enact this change in our lives.

In short – most of us are not Thriving… We are not realising our potential… And we are not living our best life…
